A Serene 32sqm Condo Home
Design and Words by IDr. Jovannah Yu of Hava Design Studio
Project location: Pioneer, Mandaluyong City, Philippines
Floor Area: 32 square meters
Inspiration
The client is a newlywed couple. They are both mountaineers - always ready for the outdoors and adventure. I wanted to translate that feeling in the space- the excitement when they are on top of the mountains while keeping that serenity when by the beach. The subtle hints of pattern also reflect the ridges, the valleys and plains of mountains or waves that come crashing in by the ocean. All materials and finishes aim to make the space feel larger and wider to achieve the design intent while still addressing the client's need to have more storage space.
Living and Dining Area
The living and dining area sets the tone of the entire space. All lighting, materials, finishes and furniture are carefully selected to make the space feel larger than it is. We were able to move the entry to the bedroom to accomodate a larger TV space and an overhead cabinet the length of the wall is installed to accommodate more storage space.
Bedroom
Made up of warm colors with carefully selected tones and patterns give the bedroom a very serene feel. The color and tone of the wallpaper was carefully selected to make the room feel bigger while the pattern subtly reflects mountain ranges. We reconfigured the lay-out of the space to accommodate a bigger wardrobe and a desk to be able to work-from-home comfortably.
Toilet and Bath
The T&B gives off quite a different feel yet still being in theme with the overall space. The spanish floor tiles give a playful vibe and the subway tiles on the shower make the space feel especially larger than it originally was. We removed the pedestal sink and exchanged it for an all-white bathroom cabinet with a mirrored vanity to make the space clean and neat.
Most Memorable Experience
It is very fun to be working with friends! The clients are my friends and it was truly a collaboration between us.
This project was started at the height of the pandemic in 2020 when everything was locked down. For the design phase, everything was done online and remotely. For the construction phase, it was difficult having to go through a project with the ever changing quarantine protocols and guidelines - it was definitely a challenge but was well-worth it at the end.
